Cormons
History
Founded in late 1968 by a visionary group of more than 120 local winegrowers, Cantina Produttori Cormòns emerged as a cooperative rooted in both tradition and innovation. Driven by the belief that the region’s winemaking future lay not in fleeting trends but in steadfast enhancement of the land, the founders established collective vineyard management, strict quality standards, and a shared code of conduct for all members
Over subsequent decades, the cooperative has grown its membership and vineyard area to approximately 350 ha, across Collio, Friuli Isonzo, and Friuli Colli Orientali DOC zones, balancing heritage grape varieties with international varietals.
In 2024, the cooperative received its first Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso for the 2022 Collio Bianco, crafted from autochthonous varietals, marking a historic achievement as the first cooperative in the region to earn such recognition. This milestone reflects the winery’s evolving excellence under the leadership of Director Alessandro Dal Zovo and President Filippo Bregant.
The Vineyards
The estate’s vineyards stretch across gently rolling hills, plains, and slopes in the northernmost corner of Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia. The landscape invites visitors to imagine terraces bathed in sunlight and caressed by cool breezes from the nearby Adriatic and Alps.
Over 350 ha of vines benefit from varied terroirs: the Collio’s marly‑sandstone soils lending finesse and longevity to whites, the alluvial soils of the Isonzo plain yielding fruit‑driven immediacy, and the calcareous‑marly elevations of the Colli Orientali supporting both whites and reds with ageing potential
A network of eight weather stations, strategically placed throughout the vineyard zones, feeds real‑time data into a central system—supporting early detection of vine diseases and enabling sustainable, minimal‑intervention viticultural practices. Members record phenological stages in a shared “Quaderno di campagna” (field diary), ensuring consistency and quality across all growers.
The Cellar
Since the early 1980s, Cantina Produttori Cormòns has transformed its cellar into a striking celebration of art and wine. Around 20 acclaimed artists of the late 20th century, such as Zancanaro, Celiberti, Ciussi, Ceschia, Spessot, Benedetti, Crico, Fornarelli, Ornella, and Menon, were invited to paint the Slavonian oak barrels used for ageing. The result is Arte in Cantina, a living gallery where vivid colours, diverse styles, and powerful symbolism turn the bottaia (ageing room) into an immersive visual experience.
The painted casks express the cooperative’s values of peace, unity, and cultural identity, and are a testament to the belief that winemaking is a form of art. In 2021, 26 of these barrels were restored to preserve their original brilliance. Today, the cellar seamlessly blends this artistic legacy with state-of-the-art winemaking infrastructure: hundreds of oak barrels and oval casks stand alongside stainless-steel vats used for fermentation and maturation. Visiting the bottaia is not only a journey through fine wine, but a feast for the senses, where history, artistry, and innovation come together under one roof.
