La Montagnetta

History

Domenico, affectionately known as Mimmo, was born in Turin several years ago. His early career was spent as an employee of the Italian State Railways—a role he often described as the most boring in the world. Driven by a desire for change, in 1998, he attended a tasting course with ONAV (National Organization of Wine Tasters), which ignited a deep passion for wine. After cultivating and vinifying a small vineyard on his own, Mimmo made the courageous decision to pursue winemaking professionally.

This leap into the unknown was fuelled by youthful energy and an unwavering love for the craft. Over the years, La Montagnetta has grown steadily, embracing the traditions of the Asti region while also pushing the boundaries of quality and expression. The winery has earned recognition for its dedication to native varieties and authentic winemaking, standing as a testament to Mimmo’s vision and commitment.

The Vineyards

La Montagnetta’s vineyards stretch across the gentle hills of the Asti region, centered in Roatto with parcels in Piovà Massaia and San Paolo Solbrito. These lands are steeped in history, with soils rich in limestone and clay that nourish vines averaging several decades in age. The terrain offers a south-southeast exposure, bathing the vineyards in ideal sunlight, while the cooling breezes preserve the freshness and aromatic complexity of the grapes.

Here, Freisa, Barbera, and Bonarda thrive, their roots delving deep into the earth, drawing out a unique mineral tension and vibrant fruit character. The vineyard is a sensory tapestry of rustling leaves, sun-warmed earth, and the subtle perfume of wildflowers, embodying the terroir’s essence with every cluster harvested.

The Cellar

Nestled at the heart of the estate, the La Montagnetta cellar is a space where tradition and nature intertwine. Constructed with local stone and timber, it exudes a quiet rustic charm, the cool, dimly lit rooms lined with oak barrels whispering stories of patience and transformation. The cellar’s earthy aromas mingle with the soft, musty scent of aging wine, creating an atmosphere both intimate and sacred.

Here, Mimmo’s hands carefully guide each batch through fermentation and maturation, allowing the wines to develop their distinctive character while respecting the rhythm of the seasons. The cellar is not merely a place of storage but a sanctuary where the soul of the vineyard is nurtured into every bottle.
