Ionis

History

Ionis was founded in the mid 1970s by oenologist Dr. Giulio Palmisano. The winery began its activity as a bulk wine supplier, rooted in the winemaking traditions of southern Italy. Over time, as wine consumption and market expectations evolved, Ionis gradually refined its focus.

In 2008, with the support of Dr. Palmisano’s sons, Ionis transitioned into a family-run brand with a renewed emphasis on bottling premium wines. This marked a clear shift toward expressing quality, identity, and craftsmanship through finished wines rather than bulk production.

The Vineyards

Ionis is based in the Itria Valley, positioned between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. This location places the winery within a region known for its strong agricultural heritage and deep connection to local food and wine culture.

The estate works with approximately 8,000 hectares of vineyards. These vineyards support the cultivation of regional grape varieties that reflect the character of Salento, with a focus on Verdeca and Primitivo.

The Cellar

Ionis combines traditional winemaking knowledge with a contemporary understanding of changing wine styles and consumer preferences. The cellar approach reflects an ongoing commitment to crafting refined and expressive wines suited to modern palates, while remaining grounded in regional identity.

While production volumes are not specified, the winery’s evolution from bulk supplier to bottled-wine producer underscores its focus on quality, family involvement, and long-term continuity.
